What Symptoms Can the Flu Cause?

With the huge spike in influenza cases this season, there is a high chance that you will become exposed to the virus at some point this year. If you are exposed and you either don’t have your flu shot or your body cannot fight off the virus, you will start to feel sick pretty quickly.

We are sorry that you aren’t feeling your best! Since the flu is a viral illness, the best way to treat it is to focus on symptom management. Our AFC Urgent Care Mooresville team explains more below, so keep reading!

How Did I Get the Flu in the First Place?

Our immune systems are constantly working hard to help protect us from illness. If you are exposed to a virus, your body can either fight it off or succumb to the illness. If the flu virus grows and multiplies in your body, you will start to experience symptoms within a few days.

If you start feeling ill, make a plan to head for home if you aren’t there yet. Influenza symptoms tend to arrive quickly and intensely, so you may start to feel much worse soon. Once you are home, prioritize rest! Your body needs to focus on recovering from the infection, so take it easy and enjoy the comforts of your couch and bed.

Symptoms of the Flu

  • Fever
  • Runny nose/congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Muscle or body aches

When Will I Feel Better?

Each flu infection is unique, so there is no set date for when your symptoms will start to resolve. If you take care of yourself, rest often and drink plenty of fluids, you can expect to start feeling better within four to seven days after the start of your symptoms.

While the majority of people will overcome the flu without the need for medical attention, certain populations need to keep a close eye on their symptoms. Older adults, people with chronic medical conditions and young children all are in a higher risk category for flu complications. If you fall into one of these categories, it might be a good idea to visit with your care provider so they can evaluate you more closely.

Fight Off Viral Illness This Season

  • Get your annual flu shot.
  • Teach proper handwashing.
  • Avoid others if they are sick.
  • Eat well and stay hydrated.
  • Make sleep a priority for everyone.
